In this image, three colors play the leading role. First, the red of the peony and then the spring green of the largest plane. Finally, the yellow of the plane on the left and the yellow stripe on the right.
I selected the peony from a photograph. I took that photo of a beautiful bunch of peonies. When I was working on an artwork for the Van Gogh contest (AvroTros) in 2015, I got the idea for this image. In that artwork, I had started with the spring green and yellow areas that you also see here. I called that Project To VanGogh 2015 and made a short video of it: https://youtu.be/DPwgVce9QDM.
For this huge peony, I chose the green and yellow as a beautiful contrast to the deep red. This makes it a color explosion, but one that is still reasonably contained.
