How beautiful and clear is this Oystercatcher in the picture ?
Beautiful birds are with their black and white body and orange-red bill. Here this also stands out nicely against the green background.
Oystercatchers are sturdily built, black and white waders that are often found on the coast but also commonly inland. The oystercatcher's beak wears down hard but also grows fast. It can change shape with food. For example, the beak becomes pointier when an oystercatcher pecks at emulses and worms in summer. On the mud flats, such a beak is also useful when poking at worms, but in winter many oystercatchers eat shellfish like cockles. And then the beak becomes blunted, because they use it as a chisel. Vogelbescherming proclaimed 2023 as the Year of the Oystercatcher. This called attention to the decline of this species and how everyone can help protect it.
