With strong westerly winds and lots of rain, we had been trying to find some sheltered water on the Wadden Sea for a week beach the ship on a nice sandbank. Even with a large Aak, this was slow going, and eventually we put the ship high up on the sandbank near het Franse Gaatje, near the island of Vlieland. The wind was still brisk, but as the sky broke open, the scenery suddenly became a bit friendlier.
The photo shows a flat bottomed ship, with the island of Vlieland and the islet De Richel in the background during sunset. Because the photo was taken with a wide-angle lens, the image is distorted in such a way that the flag on the rudder of the flat-bottomed boat is quite large (in real life it was quite a big flag as well), which gives a special perspective.
