About ‘Maulbronn after the rain’ by Marcel Hechler

I was standing beneath the old sandstone gate just as the rain shower had passed. Before me lay the courtyard of Maulbronn Monastery — wet, quiet and looking as though it had just been washed.

The cobblestones were still gleaming darkly; not a soul was in sight. It was precisely this emptiness that I wanted to capture: a place that is usually full of voices, yet for a moment entirely on its own.

On the right stands the large half-timbered house with its mint-green shutters; a few red geraniums in a window provide the only splash of vibrant colour. In the centre of the courtyard is a tree, beneath which stands a simple wooden bench; behind it rises the pointed tower with its red roof. Above it all, the wooded slope lies shrouded in mist — the mist softens the colours and casts a gentle, almost painted veil over the entire scene.

This moment moved me because it was so fleeting. A few minutes later, the sun returned, the ground dried out, and the first visitors arrived. In the photograph, however, the tranquillity after the rain remains. Next to me, a wrought-iron lantern hung on the wall; at the bottom, a small fern was growing out of the mortar joints — small signs that time passes more slowly here.

This picture thus brings a calm, nostalgic atmosphere to the room. In the living room, hallway or reading room, it evokes old walls, soft light and the beauty of a quiet moment.
