About ‘The Breath of the Forest’ by Marcel Hechler

This photograph was taken in the Ötztal valley, one morning shortly after a rain shower had passed through. What drew me in was not a single tree or a mountain peak, but the sense of disappearance: the way the mist descends from the sky and almost completely obscures the upper part of the forest.

Down below, the row of trees still stands out clearly, one tip next to the other, in a calm shade of green. But the further the gaze wanders upwards, the more the contours dissolve — until the dense forest becomes nothing more than a delicate pattern in the grey, and finally nothing at all. This empty, light-coloured expanse above the trees gives the image its tranquillity and its space to breathe.

It is a subdued, almost meditative atmosphere. Nothing imposes itself, there is no loud motif — just forest, mist and the soft light of a cloudy morning. For me, there lies a special kind of stillness.

The wide panoramic format gives the image a generous feel and really comes into its own above a sofa or a bed, where it fills an entire wall with calm and elegance. It suits anyone who wishes to bring clarity and a natural serenity to their rooms.
