This picture was taken in Marken,
Marken is a former island in the Markermeer, connected to the mainland by a dam since 1957.
Characteristic are the wooden houses on stilts.
Even older are the so-called "werven", artificial mounds on which people lived.
Marken forms one living and working place, but is divided into several hamlets.
Originally, these were actually separate from each other.
The hamlets around the harbour and the church merged into one another during the 20th century.
Now Marken is mainly a popular tourist destination.
After all, what you see here is typically Dutch: green-painted wooden houses, a harbour with sailing boats, a lighthouse and all that in a flat polder landscape surrounded by dykes.
