The Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)
With its striking blue and orange colours, the Kingfisher is one of the most colourful birds in our area. You cannot mistake it for any other native bird. Yet in nature, you will usually hear the kingfisher first, and it takes a while before you get to see it. The kingfisher lives around water and specialises in catching small fish.
The kingfisher grows 17 to 19.5 cm tall. Its wings have a wingspan of 24 to 26 cm and its body weight fluctuates between 34 and 44 grams.
The kingfisher has a fast, straight flight, often close to the surface of the water. It can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour this way. Its wing beat is whirring, interspersed with a short glide.
Kingfishers are often restless and fly away if you get too close. You won't have seen much more than a blue flash skimming low over the water.
To enjoy the kingfisher for longer, it pays to search for overhanging branches with binoculars at a spot where kingfishers are often spotted.
