In this image, two eras meet in a play of lines, curves and reflections. On the left rises The Globe: a modern office building in which glass and steel play the leading role. The rounded façade catches the light and reflects the sky, making the building appear almost to move. On the right is a fragment of the former Waldorpstraat Main Post Office, once a place where thousands of letters and parcels found their way through the Netherlands every day.
The old post office, built at a time when functionality and solidity were paramount, contrasts sharply with the transparency of The Globe. Where the post office symbolised physical connections and tangible communication, the modern building represents today's digital networks and international activity. In this photo, those worlds come together, not head-on, but at an exciting angle that emphasises the dynamism of the city.
The threatening cloudy sky reinforces that feeling. The light is subdued, almost cinematic, emphasising the structure and rhythm of the façades. The repetition of windows, the curvature of the architecture and the narrow view in the middle naturally guide the eye through the image. It is an urban landscape that not only shows what The Hague is, but also how the city is constantly changing.
This architectural photograph is ideal as wall decoration for lovers of urban photography, modern architecture and The Hague's history. A powerful work that combines tranquillity and excitement and invites you to look again and again.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
