About ‘Fog over the Stuibenfall’ by Marcel Hechler

That morning, the mist hung so low on the slopes that I could barely make out the upper part of the Stuibenfall. That is precisely what drew me here: not the picture-postcard sunny weather, but this quiet, damp day, when the valley holds back its colours and only the green of the spruce trees and the white of the water remain.

The waterfall spreads across the entire rock face, in many streams that split around the dark rocks and come together again. If you look closely, you’ll spot a second stream in the top right-hand corner that simply vanishes into the mist — as if the mountain weren’t quite revealing where the water comes from. On the left, the coniferous forest stands dense and dark; on the right, small patches of moss and clover leaves glisten on the wet rock.

I deliberately let the water flow softly so that it glides silkily over the edges. This lends the whole scene a sense of calm, almost dreamlike, even though there is constant movement within it.

For me, the picture tells of the quiet side of the mountains — of days when you get wet but stay anyway, because the atmosphere is worth it all. Hanging on the wall, it brings precisely this sense of calm into a room: a living room, a bedroom or a place where you want to take a deep breath.
