The Delta Works are the Netherlands' largest defence system against high water from the sea.
These flood defences consist of 5 storm surge barriers, 2 locks and 6 dams.
Rijkswaterstaat built the Delta Works in response to the 1953 flood disaster.
A bold construction programme for the time.
Within a year of the disaster, the first spade went into the ground in 1954 in South Holland to build the storm surge barrier in the Hollandsche IJssel.
This was possible because of the years of work by Johan van Veen, spiritual father of the Delta Plan and engineer at the Department of Public Works.
43 years and 12 water defence works later, Rijkswaterstaat completed the last major projects in 1997 with the Maeslant barrier and the Hartel barrier.
