This photo was taken in Alkmaar.
There are five cheese markets in the Netherlands, namely in Alkmaar, Edam, Hoorn, Gouda and Woerden.
In the markets in Gouda and Woerden, there is still real trade between the cheese farmers from the region and wholesalers.
The other cheese markets are tourist demonstrations or reconstructions from earlier times.
They are surrounded by stalls selling traditional Dutch items, such as clogs and of course cheese.
The cheeses are tasted, inspected, bought and weighed in and around the Waag.
Usually around 8 cheeses are delivered per berrie (portable), this weighs around 160 kilos together, by two cheese carriers.
The price of the cheese is determined by hand stroke. In the past, mainly North Holland (Edam) cheese was traded.
