Once, the bluethroat was mainly found in wetlands such as the Oostvaardersplassen, where reed beds and willow forests provide ideal habitat. However, the species has expanded and can now be seen in other landscapes, such as fields of oilseed rape and flowery ditch banks. This adaptability makes it a symbol of nature's resilience.
It was a moment of pure happiness when I discovered the bluethroat in my own front garden, in the middle of the oilseed rape. Its exuberant song filled the air, and its colourful breast shone in the sunlight. This male was sitting on his regular lookout, a twig above the yellow of the oilseed rape, and seemed completely at ease as he sang his highest song.
Previously, I had to travel far to places like the Oostvaardersplassen to see this bird, but now it sings close to home. This made the moment extra special. The photo I took shows not only the beauty of the bluethroat, but also how nature can come closer than you ever expect. It was an encounter I won't soon forget.
