About "Black-White Tide"

by Hans Kwaspen

About the artwork

When I capture this work in black and white, I feel how the essence of form and texture emerges. Without the distraction of colour, only the pure dialogue between light and shadow remains. It is these contrasts that define the power of this image: the flowing lines, the whimsical textures and the subtle nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed.

My inspiration comes from the impermanence of sand and water, which in a split second create a landscape that instantly disappears again. In black and white, this fleeting moment becomes timeless. It evokes an atmosphere of stillness and contemplation, as if the sea itself is holding its breath.

This approach follows in the tradition of photographers like Edward Weston and Aaron Siskind, who use black-and-white abstraction to elevate the beauty of the everyday into art. Like them, I look for the essence: the form, the movement, the emotion.

What makes this work special to hang on the wall is the intensity with which it continues to speak. It is not just a record of sand and water, but an abstract universe in which the viewer keeps discovering new patterns and meanings. In black and white, it gains monumental power: a timeless work of art that adds calm, depth and sophistication to any space.
