This picture was taken in IJmuiden.
The ruddy godwit is the arctic counterpart of the black-tailed godwit, more compact and heavier-built than this one, with shorter legs.
The species is only a migrant and winter visitor in the Netherlands.
They are strong fliers that can migrate long distances in one go.
Male in summer plumage is marked warm reddish-brown ("reddish") from head to undertail; female is much lighter.
