This picture was taken at the south pier in IJmuiden.
The sanderling is best known from the beach and pier, where they forage in groups and quickly run away from the rolling waves.
It is unique among sandpipers as it lacks the hind toe.
They grow to about 20 centimetres in length.
In summer, sanderlings are rust-coloured with a white belly.
In winter, they turn greyish-white and have a black patch on the forewing.
The food of these gregarious birds consists of insects, small worms, snails, but bits of weed, moss and seeds are also on the menu.
