Berlin Central Station, where journeys converge by Robert Jan Smit

Everything comes together in the heart of Berlin. Paths cross, people disappear into the crowd, and time seems to move to the rhythm of escalators and departing trains. This black-and-white photograph of the Hauptbahnhof captures precisely that feeling: a place where movement never stops, yet where an almost silent order remains visible. The symmetry of the escalators draws the eye straight down, deep into the station. Lines of steel, glass and light form an almost graphic pattern in which the travellers seem small compared to the immense architecture. Yet it is precisely these small human figures that bring the photograph to life. Everyone on their way to their own destination, briefly part of the same backdrop. By choosing black and white, the distractions of colour disappear and the structure remains: contrasts, reflections and repetitions. As a result, the station transforms from a busy transport hub into an almost abstract urban landscape. The glass façades reflect Berlin’s evening light and enhance the sense of depth and endless movement. The Hauptbahnhof is more than just a station. It is a symbol of modern Berlin: dynamic, international and constantly in motion. In this shot, architectural photography and street photography come together in a single powerful image in which rhythm, perspective and urban energy take centre stage.
