This black-and-white shot captures the fascinating geological formation along the coast near Elgol on Isle of Skye. The rock face, composed of several layers of a rarely seen structure, displays a striking pattern of round, eroded holes that excite the imagination. These natural holes, formed over centuries by wind and water and the falling out of pebbles, resemble mysterious eyes gazing out to sea.
The monochrome palette enhances the raw, ancient quality of the rock. The hard, straight lines of the rock layers contrast with the soft, organic shapes of the round holes, creating an intriguing play of light and shadow. Sunlight, falling from a sharp angle, highlights the depth of the holes and the jagged structures of the rock, sharply delineating each line and curve. Like an accumulation of natural sponges.
A deliberate choice was therefore made to shoot close-up, without environments, background and sky. The focus is on the rare geological structure and the story that can be told with it. One of an ancient history about the formation of the landscape or a crazy science fiction.
