The digital artwork "Wijk C" offers an atmospheric and detailed overview of one of Utrecht's oldest neighbourhoods. In this composition, photography, illustration and 3D visualisation fuse into a vivid panorama that brings together both historical and contemporary elements of the neighbourhood. The artist opted for a bird's-eye view, making the winding streets, characteristic working-class houses and lively street scene clearly visible.
Characteristic are the warm, slightly weathered colours reminiscent of old city maps, but brought to life digitally. Each building has been carefully designed, with an eye for details such as façade bricks, gutters and graffiti that tell the story of the neighbourhood.
"Wijk C" invites the viewer to reflect on the layered history of the neighbourhood - from working-class neighbourhood to cultural hotspot. Besides nostalgia, there is also room for reflection on urban development and gentrification. The digital nature of the work makes it interactive: via clicking or swiping, one can zoom in on details, listen to residents' stories or switch between different time layers.
The artwork thus functions as both a poetic time capsule and a social document, in which the past, present and future of District C come together in one digital panorama.
