The pelican is an out-and-out glider, flying long distances rakishly over the water. But without its wings ever touching the surface of the water. Thus, it floats around for hours. One of the peculiarities of this large bird is its fishing methods, when it will fly 10, 20 or 30 metres high. As soon as it detects a fish just below the water mirror, it folds its wings against its body, and drops perpendicularly with its head down. Often the pelican disappears completely under water.
Once it has consumed its prey, it can easily fly up out of the water with its strong wings.
