On Bonaire, donkeys live in the wild. Donkeys have been permanent residents on Bonaire since the 17th century. The Spaniards brought the donkeys with them to use as pack animals. When more modern means of transport became available such as carts, the donkeys became obsolete and were left to their own devices. Bonaire is a predominantly rugged and arid island, making it quite difficult for donkeys in the wild. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of donkeys on Bonaire, and some donkeys are used to people and allow themselves to be photographed easily. This donkey was a bit shy and actually did not want to leave the safe bushes.
