Probably they had been abandoned somewhere. Maybe buried under the sand on the beach after work had been done there. Then found again by a beachcomber who managed to find a useful purpose for them. And so the plates ended up as a wall of a barn. Hung on top of each other and together again good for many years of weather protection. In a place behind the dunes right on the Dutch coast.
But it also became more than just old rust. It has a patina of all shades of brown that because it is shone on by the sun takes on a warm glow. It has become an abstract work of art that could also hang in a museum. An echo of the work of Mondrian or Mark Rothko.
The brown shades are then given a contrasting accent by the red holes behind the perforated plate. all together, an exciting unity in which there is a lot of variety in colour and many small details.
