If you are familiar in the south of France and you go on the remote roads though it is often more like a glorified cart path you will come across them, crosses through all the mountains and valleys. Lonely crosses, sometimes nothing more than a cross of simple steel, sometimes beautiful cast crosses and very occasionally you come across these, large massive crosses carved from stone. Now this is one that holds my interest more than the others around, which are often more beautiful anyway, more stately but without what this one has. In the 15 years I have been visiting this corner of the Ardeche, flowers are placed at this cross all year round, wild flowers and leaf wreaths around the cross and leaf tissues at the foot of it. Pine cones and sweet chestnuts are placed around it. Sometimes heather flowers. So someone is tending these processional crosses all year round. Who is a mystery to us, because champmajour and ponges among which it lies are not that big and thickly populated.
