Between Zoutkeetsingel and Buitenom lies the characteristic Zoutkeetsbrug, a modest but striking drawbridge that connects the urban structure of The Hague in an understated manner. It is not a monumental span, nor is it a prominent landmark, but rather a functional structure in which technology, history and everyday life come together.
In this photograph, the low winter light captures the steel structure in an almost graphic composition. The clean lines of the truss stand out sharply against the pale sky, while the water below reflects the whole in dark tones. The bare branches on the left frame the image like a natural backdrop and reinforce the feeling of season and transience. There are no exuberant colours here, but a subdued palette that shows the atmosphere of the city at rest.
The Zoutkeetsbrug forms a physical and symbolic link between old and new The Hague. On one side is the lively thoroughfare of Buitenom, on the other the more sheltered Zoutkeetsingel with its residential buildings. It is a place where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists cross paths, where water and road meet, and where the city reveals itself in layers.
This image emphasises the beauty of the everyday. The bridge is not a piece of scenery, but a working part of the city – and that is precisely what gives it character. The reflection of steel and water conceals a tranquil poetry that invites us to pause for a moment and reflect on what we normally just pass by.
A timeless image of The Hague, in which construction and composition reinforce each other.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
