The Gornergrat (3089 m) is one of those places that you have to visit once in your life. The mountain panorama and the unique view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable.
With its sunny viewing platform, accessible all year round, the Gornergrat at 3089 metres has been one of Switzerland's top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the first fully electrified cogwheel railway in Switzerland.
The Kulmhotel, the highest mountain hotel in Switzerland, is located on the south-western tip of the ridge. Two astronomical observatories of the HFSJG (High Alpine Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat) were built on the two towers of the mountain hotel in the late 1960s.
With a length of approx. 12.9 kilometres, the Gorner Glacier is the third longest glacier in the Alps. It is located in the Monte Rosa massif south-east of Zermatt, in the Valais Alps at the foot of the well-known 4000 metre peaks Nordend, Dufourspitze (both Monte Rosa), Liskamm, Castor, Pollux and Zermatter Breithorn.
