The Leinwijk canal is a connecting canal between the Zuidlaardermeer and runs to the Kieldiep in Kielwindeweer. The Zuidlaardermeer a lake of almost 671 ha lies between Hoogezand and Zuidlaren. This means half of it lies in the province of Groningen and Drenthe. This jetty is located on the northern side near Kropswolde. Large parts of the lake and the adjacent polders are managed by the Het Groninger Landschap foundation. It is a very bird-rich area with a unique tidal marsh (Leinwijk) and pieces of grassland with many meadow birds, also the otter and beaver family can be found there. There are many harbours around this lake including De Leine, De Rietzoom, Meerzicht and also many jetties where boats can be moored for a certain time. Except for the channels, the lake is very shallow, often no deeper than one metre. It is fed by the Hunze, which has its origins in the peat bog below Valthe.
Around the Zuidlaardermeer there are also a number of mills, De Wachter, the Boezemvriend and on the Drentsediep the mill De Biks. The Drentsediep again empties into the Winschoterdiep, which again runs towards Groningen and Winschoten.
