The Schildmeer is located between the villages of Schildwolde, Overschild, Steendam and Hellum in the province of Groningen. The lake is L-shaped and a beautiful nature reserve. The Schildmeer is closest to the village of Steendam. Like the Schildmeer, this village is part of the municipality of Slochteren. In earlier times, Steendam seems to have been located between several lakes. So the road to it was very boggy. To reinforce the road, they built dams of stone to make it more passable. This probably gave rise to the name "Steendam". This jetty is near Steendam, a nice photogenic spot for the beautiful sunset.
