About "Windjammers in the Chausey Archipelago"

by Hilke Maunder

About the artwork

The Îles de Chausey form Europe's largest archipelago. 365 islands are said to be visible at low tide, 52 at high tide. According to some. Others say only 22 islands.

But only one of Europe's largest archipelago is inhabited: the Grande Île. The islands are connected by sandbanks. And their identical rock: granite. The locals sail around their island kingdom in small, flat boats called dories.

In the past, the boats were rowed. Today, this strenuous work is done by a motor. But on the first weekend in August, it's back to the oars. This is when the islands organise the Chausey Regatta.

The island kingdom belongs to three families - the Durand from Saint-Front, the Fortin and the Gélin. Almost 100 years ago, they founded the Société Civile Immobilière to manage the islands.

Today, the SCI also ensures that the growing number of visitors does not cause any major damage, either on land or in the archipelago. Every morning, the lobster fishermen head out there, accompanied by dolphins that come very close to their boats. The Îles de Chausey: a Normandy island paradise on the border with Brittany.
