Pointus are the traditional boats of the Riviera coast. For generations, fishermen on the Côte d'Azur have taken them out to sea. Usually six to eight metres long, they are moored close together in the port of Nice on the Côte d'Azur.
Le pointu was made by Ligurian and Napolitan shipbuilders who had settled in the fishing harbours of the Var and brought the type of boat with them from their homeland. The lateen sail betrays Arab influence. The rigging is simple.
The wooden boats were not fitted with an engine until 1913. Similar to the Venetian gondolas, the bow bridge is a phallic symbol - and is often painted red as an expression of masculine strength. The fishermen call it Capian.
