What a lovely complementary image of this White Wagtail on 1 of the black beaches in Iceland. This is the beach in Vik, and of the ever-nervous White Wagtails flying around, this one came to sit in front of it nicely.
The male and female wagtails are very similar. In the male we also see a black occiput which is sharply separated from the grey back. In the female, the back of the head is more grey and slowly merges into the grey back. In winter, the upper head is grey and the breast has a black breast band. The juvenile has a grey breast band. There is an undulating flight.
White wagtails are very agile little birds. They continuously wiggle their long tail. They are also quite aggressive and sometimes hold a 'fight' with their own mirror image, for example in a shiny hubcap of a car. White wagtails are migratory birds, the autumn migration period for this species is approximately from August into October.
