About ‘Westertoren — Prinsengracht, Amsterdam’ by Maarten Steunenberg

I took this photo on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, looking towards the Westertoren. Winter light, glistening water, cyclists and pedestrians on the bridge — and, at just the right moment, a single bird, right in the empty space in the sky.

What moves me about this image is that classic Amsterdam is still very much alive here. The tower, the bridge, the houseboats: it could be a postcard, but the people on the bridge aren’t extras — they’re on their way, to work, to home. The backlight casts a glimmer over everything: the trees, the railing, the water. Black and white strips away the colour of the postcard and reveals what’s really there: a centuries-old city, an ordinary morning.

For me, this is the counterpart to my misty Amstel photo. There, Amsterdam is empty and quiet; here, it’s bustling. Together, they show that one city can have two faces — and that I want to capture them both.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
