About ‘Stonehenge with a stormy sky — Wiltshire, England’ by Maarten Steunenberg

I took this photograph at Stonehenge, in the south of England, on a day with threatening skies. No sunset, no blue sky — it is precisely this sort of weather that suits this place. The clouds seem to join in with the stones.

What moves me about this image is the sense of age that you can almost touch. These stones have stood here for thousands of years, erected by people about whom we know virtually nothing. In black and white, the last vestige of the present fades away: no colour to tie the image to a season or a time. What remains is exactly what the first visitors ever saw — stone, grass and sky.

For me, this is the oldest subject I have ever photographed, and at the same time the simplest: verticals and horizontals, set in place before there was even a trace of the cities I normally photograph. I like that perspective.

In an interior, this is an image with weight — literally and figuratively. The dark sky and the heavy stones give the work a sense of presence, without becoming unsettling.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
