Tsukiji Fish Market is the world famous old fish market of Tokyo, known for its tuna auction, and has been around for several centuries. It smells of fish, fish and more fish. Outside are small sushi restaurants and all kinds of stalls where you can buy attributes for fishing and tools for cleaning but also the wasabi root, to accompany the sushi, is traded there. (Since 2018, the Tsukiji fish market has moved to the artificial island of Toyosu).
Fresh wasabi has a delicate flavor, slightly sweet and creamy and in color light green, almost pastel green. Real wasabi comes from Japan from the Wasabi plant (Wasabia japonica) from which the root is harvested. A Wasabi plant needs over two years to be harvested and only grows in pure mountain or spring water.
