The tower of the academy building dominates the west side of this part of Het Rapenburg in Leiden. From the Doelen bridge near the National Museum of Antiquities, this centuries-old Leiden canal bends further east. The stately mansions and old bridges over the canal is a characteristic piece of Holland that does not belong to Amsterdam alone.
This South Holland municipality has a rich cultural history with famous painters Rembrandt van Rijn, Lucas van Leyden and Jan Steen who were born here and trained as painters. Around 1389, Het Rapenburg was the southern edge of the city.
