About "View of the Ortler from St. Valentin, EDWARD THEODORE COMPTON, 1889"

by Natasja Tollenaar

About the artwork

The Ortler (Italian: Ortles) is a 3905 meter high mountain in northern Italian South Tyrol, a stone's throw from the Lombardy region. It is the highest peak of the mountain massif of the same name. Until the transition from South Tyrol to Italy in 1919, it was the highest peak in Austria.

When this work of art was painted this piece of Tyrol was still Austrian.

Edward Theodore Compton, usually referred to as E. T. Compton, (July 29, 1849 - Feldafing, Bavaria, Germany March 22, 1921) was a German artist, illustrator and mountaineer born in England. He is known for his paintings and drawings of alpine landscapes and as a mountaineer he made 300 major climbs, including no less than 27 first climbs. In 1867 his family decided to emigrate to Germany and settle in Darmstadt.
