About the artwork

"A still life of lunch for theater visitors, consisting of a program booklet, mandarins in a bowl with a silver pipe and tobacco pouch next to it. The program booklet on which a mandarin blossom is depicted, the coat of arms of the Ichikawa family, sticks out of the box. The box reads ' Izumiya´, probably the name of a favorite restaurant of the Ichikawa family of actors. With three poems."
"A surimono is a luxurious print in which an image is combined with one or more poems. When printing a surimono, thicker paper, blind embossing and metal pigments, such as copper and silver powder were often used. The prints were often commissioned by poets. made and given as an exclusive gift to friends and relations."
