Many know Gran Canaria, the largest island of the Canary Islands, for its beach holidays. At first glance, the volcanic landscape inland looks like a hot and dry desert. But for those who look carefully will find variety. I took this photo on a hike around reservoir Chira. The sparse vegetation gives a very colourful contrast against the brownish-grey volcanic rock. I was surprised by the vastness of the landscape, precisely because of the lack of vegetation. The few trees in the picture run away in a perspective line from bottom right to top left. This gives scale to the vast landscape without making you lose sight of the landscape through the trees. Thanks to the dry air, even the trees far in the background are bright in colour.
