About "Under the pier at Timmendorfer Strand"

by Thomas Riess

About the artwork

The Maritim pier extends around 250 metres into the Baltic Sea and offers a 427-metre-long circular path over the sea. Viewed from above, its shape can be described as that of a sprawling sling. The hollow steel box girder spans 23 bridge spans with a span of 20 metres and is finally clamped in a reinforced concrete abutment located under the bridge forecourt. The abutment, which is covered with sand and can no longer be seen, is deeply founded on eight steel driven piles and, thanks to its rigidity, enables access to the bridge without joints or transitions. The total accessible area of the bridge, lined with up to eight centimetre-thick Bongossi wooden planks, is 1,863 m² (excluding the jetty and its access ramps)[1] The bridge has two jetties, one for local bathing boats and one for pleasure craft, each around 20 metres long.
