Beneath the imposing structure of the Oberbaumbrücke in Berlin, a hidden world of rhythm and repetition unfolds. This pedestrian gallery, tucked away beneath the iconic bridge, reveals a completely different side to the city. Tranquil, almost introspective, and removed from the hustle and bustle taking place above and alongside the bridge.
The power of this photograph lies in its symmetry and the interplay of lines. The succession of brick arches forms a visual cadence that naturally draws the eye towards the vanishing point. Each arch is a repetition, yet never exactly the same; subtle variations in light and shadow lend depth and character to the space. The incoming daylight cuts sharply through the structure, casting a pattern on the ground that appears almost graphic. The Oberbaumbrücke itself is a historic symbol of connection in Berlin—literally between the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, but also figuratively as a witness to a divided and later reunited city. Beneath this bridge, you do not immediately sense that history, but rather the timelessness of the architecture. The brickwork, the robust construction and the repetition of forms create an atmosphere that feels both industrial and almost sacred.
This place invites you to slow down. Whilst above and alongside the bridge the traffic and the city continue to move, here everything seems to stand still for a moment. It is a passageway, yet at the same time a destination in its own right—a place where light, shadow and structure converge in an almost meditative experience.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
