Times Square, New York City. If you like neon, energy and visual chaos, this is the place to be! During my trip to New York, I headed to Times Square early in the morning. Thanks to the pandemic, the crowds were not too bad, allowing me to position myself in the middle of the street, a rare moment in this normally crowded place.
First I fine-tuned my camera's settings: shutter speed, aperture, ISO. Then waiting for the right moment. A few taxis and a van passed by, just enough to add depth and movement to the scene. The illuminated advertisements, billboards and reflections created an explosion of colour, a visual feast in the heart of Manhattan.
For this shot, I used a wide-angle lens so that I could properly capture the character of the street and the vertical lines of the buildings. The composition is tight, with a central gaze direction that draws you into the image as a viewer.
Once back in the Netherlands, I edit my images with an eye for detail. I carefully tune contrast, colour and sharpness to preserve the energy of that moment. For me, this work is typically New York: lively, raw and full of character.
