Madeira is known for its levadas, the man-made waterways. These channels bring the water from the mountains to the fields and villages.
On a hike in the mountains of Madeira near Ribeiro Frio, I saw this water staircase of a levada.
The water channel had to compensate for a considerable difference in altitude. The water stairs were built in the forest for this purpose.
Moss and lichen grow everywhere from the humidity and the splashing water.
While the water falls down higher steps, it is accompanied on the right by smaller steps for people to walk on.
The fresh and vibrant green of the lichens and mosses and the colourful foliage enliven the picture. The water falling down in a wide cascade is photographed with a long exposure, giving it a fluid effect.
The picture has a revitalising and refreshing effect in any room. You could almost hear the rushing of the water.
