The vast sky above Monument Valley

by Frank Schröter Photography

A dense field of stars stretches across the striking table mountains of Monument Valley. The bright structures of the Milky Way run diagonally across the sky, forming the focal point of the composition. On the ground, dark areas alternate with warmly lit shrubs and rocky outcrops. The low horizon line connects the familiar shapes of the desert landscape with the vast expanse of the night sky.

The familiar shapes of the table mountains remain low in the frame, leaving plenty of space for the sky. To the left and in the centre, individual rock formations stand out as dark silhouettes. In the foreground, warm patches of light trace the outlines of the dry shrubs and the ground. Above them, dense, bright areas of stars alternate with darker zones; their diagonal direction brings movement to the wide format.

The final version for sale was individually developed and retouched. The low-lying landscape and the richly textured sky together form an expressive composition. As a wall hanging, the motif combines the vastness of the landscape with the delicate structures of the starry sky. Viewed from a distance, the tranquil rock formations and the bright band of sky dominate the impression; on closer inspection, numerous small stars come to the fore. The earthy colours at the bottom edge form a warm base for the dark sky. The existing signature has been retained.
