The Raven’s Last Watch

by Frank Schröter Photography

A dark bird perches on the topmost branch of a bare tree. The widely branching boughs trace delicate lines against the pale blue sky. On the ground, patches of dry wood alternate with green shrubs; behind them runs a reddish rocky outcrop. The vertical composition leads from the sturdy trunk up to the small figure high in the crown. A nature photograph whose impact arises from the interplay of open space, branching forms and a silent observer. The branches extend far to the left and right, giving the tree an open, almost sketch-like form. Much of the sky remains visible between them. The dark bird sits slightly above the centre, providing a small, distinct focal point. In the lower part of the image, light-coloured, horizontal branches lead back to the trunk. The green bushes and the red ground lend the scene a warm foundation.

The photograph was individually developed and retouched. The portrait format highlights the tree’s height and the open space above the crown. As a wall hanging, the image thrives on the interplay between the fine lines and the larger areas of colour. The bird is a subtle detail that reveals itself upon closer inspection. Even from a distance, the widely branching foliage remains clearly recognisable as a striking shape.
