Cool Flame – Antelope Canyon

by Frank Schröter Photography

Cool shades of pink and violet characterise the nearby rock faces in Antelope Canyon. In between, a narrow, bright strip of sky stretches across the portrait-format frame. Further in the background, a sandstone surface glows a warm orange, its pointed shape reminiscent of a flame. The photograph thrives on the interplay between these warm and cool areas, as well as the long lines of the layered walls.

On the right-hand side, a broad, finely striped surface extends upwards. On the left, smaller arches and recessed edges create a more dynamic pattern. The bright opening connects both sides, although their shapes appear very different. The eye follows the contours and repeatedly discovers small variations in the rock amidst the large surfaces. Light and shadow lend depth to the curves and reveal the narrowness of the rock cavity.

The photograph was individually developed and retouched. As a wall hanging, it combines a calm colour palette with a strong, warm accent. Viewed up close, the fine layers of the sandstone invite closer inspection. From a greater distance, the flowing form of the sky and the orange glow in the depths become more prominent.
