Perched motionless on its lookout among the snow-covered branches, a goshawk seems to see right through the wintry scenery, constantly on the lookout for movement. Whilst many animals seek shelter on cold days, the goshawk remains active. It is precisely in winter that this impressive bird of prey demonstrates why it is one of the most successful hunters in our forests. The goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is built for speed and agility. With its broad wings and long tail, it manoeuvres effortlessly through trees and bushes. An unexpected attack from cover is often enough to take its prey by surprise. Its diet includes pigeons, crows, ducks and smaller mammals. Even in a snow-covered landscape, the goshawk knows how to carefully weigh up its chances. In this photo, the winter weather provides a beautiful backdrop. The white snow emphasises the finely barred plumage, whilst the dark head and piercing gaze stand out even more. The frost-covered branches frame the bird almost like a natural window, drawing all attention to the goshawk. Although the goshawk was once heavily persecuted, the species has managed to recover well in the Netherlands. Nowadays, it is once again a regular sight in wooded areas in many places. Yet an encounter remains a special occasion. Often you do not hear it and only see it once it has already disappeared. A moment of silence, in the middle of winter. The goshawk waits patiently, alert and unfazed by the cold – the undisputed ruler of the snow-covered forest.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
