A watery vista with several windmills - at first glance a typical Dutch landscape. However, the purplish mountains in the distance are rather Italian in appearance. Philips Koninck - a pupil of Rembrandt - chose a high vantage point because of the wide view. In front, he placed several majestic, pasty-painted trees in shades of brown-green.
