During our sailing trip through the remote Scoresby Sound in Greenland, we sailed right past this monumental glacier. It is a moment when, as a human being, you feel more insignificant than ever. This image was born out of pure wonder at the raw, dynamic forces of Arctic nature; a landscape that is constantly in motion, yet at the same time exudes an age-old tranquillity. At the centre of the composition, you can see the immense glacier plunging down like a frozen river between the jet-black, steep rock faces. If you look closely, you’ll notice the deep, bluish fracture lines and the jagged structures in the ice—signs of the enormous pressure under which the ice moves. At the foot of the glacier, small, freshly broken-off ice floes drift in the rippleless water. The summit of the dark mountain is shrouded in a subtle wisp of mist, which perfectly emphasises the bleak and mysterious atmosphere of the Arctic. With this piece, I wanted to convey a cool yet intensely powerful feeling. It conveys the emotion of an untamed wilderness and shows a deep respect for the elements. Stunning in an interior: This piece brings the impressive dynamism and raw texture of the Arctic landscape straight into your home. The stark contrasts between the light glacial ice and the dark rock formations make it a powerful statement piece on the wall. It fits perfectly into a modern, industrial or Scandinavian interior where there is a need for a natural eye-catcher with depth. An inspiring piece for travellers, mountaineers and nature lovers who want to bring the pure, raw power of the far north into their home.
The earth is art, the photographer is only a witness. This is my mindset when I take my photos. Conditions must be right before I take a picture. Through my work I try to make it possible that you can place a piece of art from the earth in your living room.
