Rotterdam is known for its modern skyline and glass towers, but the true soul of the city often lies in places where the past is still tangible. This atmospheric night photo, taken from the dynamic Noordoever, captures a moment of serene beauty on the Maas. At the heart of the composition lies Noordereiland, a characteristic piece of Rotterdam that lies like a ship in the river. The old, stately mansions on the quay exude a warm sense of security, their facades gently reflected in the rippling water of the river.
Above these historic buildings rises a monument of steel and technology: De Hef. Like a white-lit skeleton, the former railway bridge towers high above the rooftops. De Hef, officially known as the Koningshavenbrug, is more than just a bridge; it is a symbol of Rotterdam's reconstruction and the city's indestructible work ethic. The deliberate choice of a night shot creates a beautiful contrast between the nostalgic yellow of the street lighting on the island and the bright, almost silvery light of the steel structure. This work of art brings the unique duality of Rotterdam into your home: the small-scale charm of the old island versus the grandeur of industrial architecture. It is an image that radiates tranquillity, but at the same time reminds us of the movement of the harbour and the rhythm of the Maas. Whether you are a native of Rotterdam with a heart for history or a lover of urban photography, this view of Noordereiland and the Hef is a timeless ode to the city. An atmospheric showpiece that gives any space a characteristic Rotterdam accent.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
