Despite its name, the Oderteich is a reservoir. The reservoir is part of the Oberharzer Wasserregal cultural monument and was built between 1715 and 1722. In conjunction with the Rehberg ditch system, it once supplied the Andreasberg mines with water. This ensured that enough water was available for the operation of the travelling mines even during dry periods.
Today, the Oderteich has lost this function and is part of the Upper Harz Water Management World Heritage Site.
