The Hompesche mill is located in the middle of the "Island in the Meuse" near Stevensweert. It is a beautifully restored centuries-old grain mill. This 300-year-old mill is a national monument and is the tallest tower mill in Limburg. The mill is regularly open to the public, and there is a cosy mill terrace overlooking the beautiful landscape.
From the mill, several beautiful walks can be undertaken through the nature-rich landscape of the old Maas river, as well as through the old fortified town of Stevensweert, built by the Spanish during the Spanish 80-year war against the Netherlands. The infrastructure built at the time that formed the basis of the defensive vision is still visible today in Stevensweert's historic core. Stevensweert, unknown makes unloved, a gem along the Maas in the middle of Limburg. It is 't worth visiting once and enjoying the pretty town and the beautiful Maas valley nature surrounding it.
Then don't forget the monument of 2000-year-old oaks at the water's edge, excavated during the clearing of the Meuse and now an iconic monument in the landscape.
