Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

About ‘The Hague: between shade and city life.’ by Robert Jan Smit

Anyone walking through the gate at Kortenbos is struck by a striking contrast. The dark brick tunnel forms a natural frame for the lively street scene that unfolds on the other side. Here, the visitor looks out onto Oude Molstraat, with the junction with Molenstraat in the background, right in the historic heart of The Hague.
The photograph plays beautifully with light and dark. From the sheltered shade of the gateway, the eye is automatically drawn towards the bright daylight. The ancient walls tell a story of centuries of urban history, whilst outside, contemporary life goes on as usual. A pedestrian crosses the street, residents enjoy a moment of peace, and bicycles are parked along the façades. These are everyday scenes which, precisely because of this, capture the city’s atmosphere so well.
The Hague is known for its government buildings and international character, but in streets like the Oude Molstraat, the city reveals its more human side. Narrow streets, historic façades and hidden vistas give this neighbourhood an almost village-like charm. The gateway serves as a symbolic transition between past and present, between stillness and movement.
This photograph invites you to pause for a moment and look. Not at a grand monument or a famous landmark, but at a small slice of city life that is easily overlooked. It is precisely in such unexpected glimpses that the true beauty of a city often lies.
